The former Penn State assistant coach and current convicted child molester, Jerry Sandusky, was sentenced to serve 30 to 60 years today for sexually abusing 10 boys he met through his charity for children.
Sandusky faced a total of 45 counts of child sex abuse, which could have given him some 400 years in the slammer. But Judge John Cleland apparently felt that the 30 to 60 year sentence somehow drove home the whole life-in-jail idea a bit better for the now 68-year-old Sandusky.
Sandusky still maintained his innocence this morning, telling Judge Cleland, “They could treat me as a monster, but they can’t take away my heart. In my heart, I know I did not do these alleged disgusting acts.” (I’m actually pretty confident that scientists would love to take a deep look into Sandusky’s monster-heart, for science, of course.)
He also added this brilliant little piece of bullshit, which will likely go down as one of the most inappropriate statements in the history of language: “I would cherish the opportunity to be a little candle for others as my life goes on as they have been a huge light to me.”
