Spring is in the air and things are changing. Tinto and Tiffin are getting bigger. The Marathon Grill fam is getting smaller, with the closing of the Commerce Square location. Chilango is now Distrito Federal and Astral Plane Millennium (a name that we thought was peerless in its stupidity) is now CChriStevens BYOB (effectively proving us wrong). Jayson Grossberg is out at 707. Anthony Bonett is in at Alison at Blue Bell. Ex-Phillie Mike Schmidt and WMMR DJ Pierre Roberts are both appearing on wine bottles, while folks around East Passyunk are hitting the bottle with the opening of Devil’s Den.
As the weather heats up, so does the rumor mill. South Philly’s iconic Melrose Diner might be for sale. Bobby Flay’s burger joint Bobby’s Burger Palace and UK noodle chain Wagamama might be coming to University City. The Wash West building set to ensconce Michael O’Halloran’s The Waverly might be for lease. After dinner together at Villa di Roma, Stephen Starr and Marc Vetri might have something in the works, as might Starr and Mr. Momofuku David Chang, who had dinner together at Buddakan NYC.
And don’t look now, but quick on the heels of Eric Ripert, Joel Robuchon is coming to town! If all plans go through with The Unknot, the spectacular Winka Dubbeldam-designed condo-hotel to be managed by GHM Hotels (of the Setai in Miami and the Chedi in Milan and Phuket), a branch of L’Atelier de Joel Robuchon will anchor the lobby. It will be the third in the United States… in Philly! You like us, you really like us!
A big change is the new menu and concept at Brasserie Perrier. The Walnut Street meat market is shifting its tastes and embracing the brasserie style its name has always suggested but never delivered on. The change comes as a strategy not to compete with Table 31 in the Comcast Center, scheduled to open in May. What it means for diner at BP is brasserie classics like Nicoise and lyonnaise salads, moules frites, escargots and onion soup gratinée. Platters of iced shellfish, charcuterie and cheese are available pour un or deux, and there’s a classic 20-ounce Chateaubriand with béarnaise for two. True to the brasserie style, BP will be offering a plat du jour: Salisbury steak on Mondays; poached two-pound Maine lobster on Tuesdays; diver scallops on Wednesdays; prime rib on Thursdays; bouillabaisse on Fridays; rack of lamb on Saturdays; and linguini with cockles on Sundays. Magnifique, Georges.
The earth is also changing, with those pesky glaciers melting and all. Find out how you can be a responsible citizen at White Dog Café’s second-annual Green Dog Day on April 3 from 9 to 10:30am, where green peeps will lead a discussion on sustainable practices. Or just go for the yummy breakfast of fair trade coffee, fresh-baked muffins, free-range eggs and pastured bacon, pancakes and homemade granola with local yogurt.
