Sure, everyone knows beer connoisseurs flock to popular Philly haunts such as Monk's, where occasional gourmet, pre-fixe dinner events always sell out, or Old City's Eulogy Tavern, home to a dark and moody backdrop that fronts this acclaimed beer-lovers' Mecca. But many a Philadelphian holds a personal favorite find closely when speaking of superior suds. Here are a few off-the-beaten path finds for better beers and an all-around positive imbibing experience.

Black Door
Whatever the weather, this beacon of a bar shines like a jewel in the crown of Queen Village. Perfect for wintry nights with its fireplace and ski-lodge-like multi levels, but equally apropos for stealing away on steamy nights for a cold beer in this oft-turned-over property that finally finds a fit with a basic but better bar concept that's not too, well, concepted. Find here good beer in the way of Belgian brews along with local favorites from Yards and others. Food fits the bill with a soon-to-be legendary lamb sandwich along with bar staffers who are friendly and attentive.

627 S. Second St., Philadelphia, 215.574.2958.

South Philadelphia Tap Room
Deep in the heart of old South Philly, a more uptown-type corner bar has risen to offer some of the best beers around - Yards, Victory, Dogfish Head, Sly Fox, Flying Fish - as well a healthy selection from across the pond and beyond. Stop in on a hot summer afternoon or evening and lift a Leffe or find refreshment in a bright and lemony Hoegaarden or two in this most welcoming haunt.

McMenamin's Tavern
Many folks who frequent this Northwest neighborhood hang think of Mount Airy's most popular bar as a great place to catch a Phillies or Eagles game on one of the many TVs dominating this modest space. But not just for sports fans, this bar beacons to all in this comfortably diverse quarter and serves as a meeting spot for suburbanites and locals alike. Couple that with its outdoor seating that's off the Avenue, along with perfectly poured Guinness, Harp and Hoegaardens, and you've got the ideal beer lovers' summertime hang.

7170 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia, 215.247.9920.

The Khyber
Everyone knows rockers dig beer in mass quantities. But few rock bars offer as discerning a beer list as Old City's long-time place to play it loud and kick back over brews spanning the globe. Heavy hitters here include Quebec's Fin de Monde, Chimay Grand Reserve and the ever-popular summertime Hoegaarden. But fans of basic suds stay put - there's also PBRs for $2 along with Rolling Rock and Bud.

Grey Lodge Pub
Northeast folks continue to give thumbs up to this Bridesburg pick for up-market brews offered alongside some basic American swill that only dumbs down the killer offerings here. A newly expanded space with the addition of a second floor only adds to the appeal.
