As one chapter in an open, revolving door book opens, another one closes. Last week saw us old-heads reveling in the return of our beloved rave days, while this week brings a sad reminder that our lofted, sweaty adolescent nights are indeed a thing of the past, no matter what nostalgic festival bears its head in our midst.

Tonight, Fluid will celebrate the closing of its Platinum night, an event which once distinguished Philly as the epicenter of domestic drum n’ bass.

The brainchild of self-proclaimed “America’s best DJ,” Damian “Diselboy” Higgens and Chris “Kaos” Ritter, the original Platinum residents used their influence and connections to bring the top worldwide jungle artists each and every week. Starting in 1998, both locals and global gawkers streamed into Fluid’s vaulted cavern to be treated to drum n’ bass of the highest quality, the leading spot to do so outside of its primary home, London (though some would argue Bristol, UK is the true habitat, but, whatever. Poo on them).

Though its popularity has waned in the past year, first being demoted from a weekly to a monthly, then only thrown sporadically, Platinum can still be credited as the longest running drum n’ bass weekly in the U.S. It put Philadelphia on the map as a serious drum n’ bass town, and established an environment of creativity, an enclave of jungle. Platinum allowed our city to churn out serious talent like Andy Sine and Jae Kennedy, and permitted recognized artists like J. Smooth and the GFS collective to shine in the newfound spotlight.

In its heyday, Platinum was the place to see and be seen on Thursday nights while grooving to superstars like Andy C, Tech Itch, and Ed Rush. But it was also unique in its ability to break new DJ’s and producers in a humble setting, one where you could literally show up in a clown suit and still feel comfortable. Sneakers were encouraged for maximum dance ability. Platinum felt like reckless abandon, but was really organized chaos of the best variety. It was special, and it will be missed.

Platinum, with Dieselboy and DJ Dara, Thurs., Oct. 14, $10, Fluid Nightclub, 613 S. 4th St.,
