Sugarcube

Flip open any fashion magazine, and you’ll see that a sophisticated, polished and ladylike look is back in a big way. But one Old City boutique takes this style to a new place with a gorgeous stock of vintage and new pieces housed in a ruggedly minimalist space that’s pure chic.

Sugarcube, which opened in early August, is where undeniable girlishness meets laid-back cool. Owner Elisa Buratto, who comes from a fine arts background and has had a lifelong passion for vintage, used her artist’s eye to transform the one-time bank (the dressing room was once a safe!) into a must-stop for all glamour girls.

It’s bright, open and breezy, with unexpected design elements such as a moose antler chandelier and handgun-shaped wall sconces that perfectly complement the racks of downright pretty clothing and accessories.

Spanning from the 1940s to today, the pieces Buratto selects are simple, well-crafted shapes with fun details– and something for every budget. Think beaded cardigans, lace cocktail dresses, luxe fur-trimmed jackets and tailored tweeds.

Velvet, satin and metallic clothing and accents will get you sparkling for the holidays. The selection is primarily vintage, but Buratto carries new and independent designers as well, such as Unis, Saja and Nisa San Francisco.

She also stocks the new Wrangler line by Wendy Mullins (and will feature the up-and-coming Built by Wendy line this spring)– pieces that exemplify vintage style with contemporary cuts.

“The look is so ‘in’ right now,” says Buratto, “many customers aren’t sure which pieces are true vintage and which are new at first. The line can definitely get blurred.”

The look, however, doesn’t end with clothing. Some of Buratto’s best sellers are handbags, belts, jewelry and shoes– and she’s very particular about which ones make the cut. Many of her vintage shoes have never been worn, and other accessories are in similarly impeccable condition.

So whether it’s a business meeting, a dressy dinner, or a fabulous cocktail party, Sugarcube has the unique, timeless pieces that will get you noticed…and envied.
