The New Guard: Philly’s Design Talent

Fashion is fueled by up-and-coming talent who create new looks and attire. New York may be the home of fashion, however Philadelphia has been growing and harvesting its new fashion sect, and we’re not likely to let these fashion geniuses out of our sight. Philadelphia boutiques and shops are featuring more homegrown talent and generating buzz about some very talented local designers.

Smak Parlour is a gem of a Philadelphia boutique featuring quirky accessories and right-on trend clothing. What makes this shop a rarity is that every piece (aside from the shoes) is designed and made in store by the owners (and friends) Abby and Kate. (You can even see their work station and rolls of fabric in the back of the store.) Their girly, but punk edge is exhibited in baby doll dresses, cropped jackets and Barbie Doll earrings. Entering Smak Parlour, you’re guaranteed to find something one of a kind.

Retro is raging right now, with fashion harking back to the days of yesteryear. Local clothing line, The Farmer’s Daughter, is a throwback to the everyday 40s glamour with vintage-looking A-line dresses. Carried in Philadelphia boutique Conspiracy Showroom, The Farmer’s Daughter also utilizes Myspace as word of mouth advertising. Myspace.com/beatnikhick

Philadelphia-bred designer Suzie Morris finds inspiration in art and literature and interprets that into her designs for her clothing line Rehab by Suzie Morris. Reworked and “rehabbed” pieces, Morris takes thrift store finds and transforms them into beautiful dresses, jackets and sweaters. She even features “rehabbed” dolls for a unique touch to her Arts & Crafts aesthetic. Also available at Conspiracy Showroom.

When sisters get together nothing but good can come. Look at Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. Sisters Amber and Heather Zezeck are mini moguls as well, starting with their very hip and very talked-about jewelry line Brookadelphia, named because sister Amber is in Brooklyn and Heather based in Philadelphia. However far apart, this collaborative line features acrylic necklaces and earrings with kitschy and ironic slogans. If you want to wear your politic affiliation on your sleeve, try their “Liberal” plate necklace or maybe the “No Bombs Allowed.” They also do customized pieces. Available at Topstitch and Conspiracy Showroom.
