Art: Gregory Prestegord

Grit and grime is the foundation of Recent Paintings by Gregory Prestegord at F.A.N. Art Gallery. This art depicts Philly’s wrong side of the tracks. Prestegord captures it all with an unblinking eye and brushwork that is dense and cinematic: skyline images capture a city gone to ruin, people appear as if their souls have long gone missing and back alleys radiate claustrophobia shot through with visceral fight-or-flight emotional heft. Light is suffused and wanting, while the compositions are messy to the extreme but marked with a tight precision. This finds Prestegord walking a precarious path on a tightrope swaying in the fetid urban breeze, the stench of rotting garbage this side of heaven.
