Remember the Livestrong bracelet craze five years ago? The new feel-good, look-good bracelet everyone is talking about (no really, they are) is the Brazilet. Brazilets–the neon bracelet accessories from Bahia, Brazil–have taken the world by storm on the wrists of celebrities like Lindsay Lohan, Lauren Conrad and Anne Hathaway.
Look Good: These colorful accessories are Brazilian wish bracelets, casual and perfect for summer. Etched along each of the colorful bands is a Portuguese slogan, “Bonfim Da Bahia,” which translates to “In remembrance of our Patron Saint, good luck in life.” Each bracelet has three ties, which come together at the wrist. For each of the three knots, the wearer of the Brazilet can make three wishes. The wishes are rumored to come true if the bracelet is never taken off and worn until it virtually disintegrates. The brazilet has the look and texture of a shoelace and has graced Brazil for more than 200 years. It wasn’t until recently, however, that the Brazilet became popular in the U.S., emerging in trendy jewelry boutiques in Los Angeles and New York City.
Feel Good: The two best parts about the Brazilet, aside from the chic neon color, are its price and charity purpose. The Brazilet, sold in retail for $5, is available online and in numerous stores, including Philly’s own JKarma Boutique in Old City. A portion of all proceeds made from the Brazilet is allocated to re-building Brazil’s rainforest. Thus far, more than 2,000 trees have been planted in Brazil because of the profits and proceeds from the Brazilet.
