All Ages Comedy at the Fire

Thursday night was the second All Ages Comedy Show at The Fire in Fishtown, hosted by local stand up comedian, Alex Grubard.  The show was sparsely attended, but that didn’t stop the comics from delivering a fantastic performance (in fact, the size of the audience provided the fodder for many of the jokes).  The comics riffed with the small crowd, made up of their own friends and fellow comics, creating a relaxed and intimate atmosphere unique to the venue.

Grubard created the show to give underage comics a chance to perform at a decent venue and to meet other young, local comics.  When asked about his own experience as a teenager trying to find a place to do stand up Grubard said, “When I was 18 I took a barback job Wednesdays and Thursdays at New York Comedy Club in order to go up at the end of their 3 hour shows for stage time. I did that for a year. The next year I handed out flyers in Times Square for stage time at the NY Improv. All Ages Comedy is an opportunity for comedians who are underage to get up in a cool venue and not have to degrade themselves to do so.”

The show featured local Philly comedians Chris McGrail, Stephen Sudia, Nicole Churchill, Alex Pearlman, and Tom Cassidy.  Headlining was New York comedian, Jermaine Fowler (NBC’s Stand-Up for Diversity) who ended the show with a hilarious set about working at Quizzno’s and growing up poor.  For details about the next All Ages Comedy Show visit Alexgrubard.com.  Tickets are only $7, so come out and support local comedy in Philly!
