Camden is the 2nd Most Dangerous City in America

Sometimes, just for a moment, I find myself forgetting that Camden actually exists. It’s not that I actively choose to block it out of my mind, like my 15th birthday party, but it’s probably because Philadelphians only go to Camden for one of two things: the Aquarium or a Phish show.

But Camden, like a “troubled teen” who’s appeared on multiple episodes of Maury, just can’t get its act together. And much in the same way said troubled team needs discipline from an overbearing, ex-military/security guard, Camden needs help.

Yesterday, for the second year in a row, Camden, which has had 48 homicides so far (not going this morning), was named the 2nd most dangerous city in America according to the 2011 CQ Press City Crime Rankings. Flint, Michigan, which has appeared in more than one Michael Moore documentary, came in first, with Detroit, St. Louis and Oakland not far behind.

City officials and police have stated that massive budget problems and a deteriorating infrastructure have eroded the city’s ability to keep the peace. In an article for The Inky, one resident summed up Camden’s woes with what is surely the scariest quote you’ll hear all day, “We don’t have any real policing in Camden. They’re just out here to pick up the bodies.”

Seems we may want to start calling the Delaware River “River Styx” for good measure.

Come on Camden, if you really try hard and apply yourself, I know you can be number ONE… you CAN do it!

  • Pwenfepa

What a blow to Newark, they thought they were the toughest hoods out there !

  • Sisterofhonesty2010

are you serious these guys are surrounded by poverty and the have less policing because of there money issues honestly these guys just need to declare a state of emergency get help from the troops stop the violence save lives look at there records because even when the wasn’t number 1 there were still on the list enuff is enuff !

  • Pseydtonne

It’s not a state of emergency if it’s been like this for four decades. The only thing that emerged was an RSS alert.

Camden needs help, a frightening amount of it. However it may be simpler to give everyone a one-month warning, fire-bomb it, then salt the ground.

No one wants to invest in the place because there isn’t enough civic protection for capital investments. If someone built an office park park where the PATCO and River Line meet (what would be high-end property if it were anywhere else but is merely a CVS now), that person would also need to hire an armed security force to protect the parking garage and grounds. It would need to be a police state, which isn’t practical when there is plenty of space out in Bellmawr (along with Turnpike access and a diner).

  • Lola Q

Newark can beat  it … or east orangee…

  • Behr328

the national guard fulfill its mission and control the situation if it comes downs to anarchy, which would be the same as no policing.

CAMDEN IS THE 2ND MOST DANGEROUS CITY IN AMERICA?

Do you know how many cities are in “AMERICA”?  and Camden is the 2nd most dangerous? I think the right way to post it is “Camden is the 2nd most dangerous city of United State of America”. In America we can find more than 20 countries. United State is a country, not a continent… and trust me, you can find many cities more dangerous than Camden in the real “America”.

  • Abc123

Just look at the demographics. That’s probably the reason.

  • beviey

they should fence in newark and camden do a control burn. Jail up all the trash and watch the rest to see what comes of it, then in camden sell the water front for some tax releif for the state and sell realestate in newark for new Industarial instead of leting it go out of the US!

Calm down, Nancy. “America” is short for “United States of America”. Just like people will call it “the U.S.” or the “the states” or “the United States”.

  • Brett Champion

If things are really that bad in Camden, then the state has an obligation to take over the policing of the city. They would still charge the city for the service, but if the city itself can’t handle it, then state has to.

  • Francisco Medina

I USED TO LIVE IN CAMDEN, NJ  FROM 2007-2010. AND YES, THAT TOWN IS DANGEROUS. MOST OF THE PEOPLE OVER THERE CONSUME DRUGS. MOST PEOPLE LOOKS LIKE ZOOMBIES, AND MOST PEOPLE ARE PUERTO RICANS AND AFRO-AMERICANS.

    IT’S SAD BUT TRUE.

  • Francisco Medina

PUERTO RICANS AND AFRO-AMERICANS TOGETHER = LAZY AND DRUG CONSUMER. THAT IS CAMDEN, NJ.  SAD BUT TRUE.

  • Novus_ordo_4

Why should I payu for the underclass criminals that live there?
Better make it a big open jail. Bord up th ewhole city with a surrounding wall.

  • Novus_ordo_4

No policing – no police brutality

THERE IS STILL GOOD PEOPLE LIVING IN CAMDEN , BUT DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO MOVE GIVE US A BREAK

  • Samay

Why not a movement is organized to clean up the city and in order to do so streets must be cleaned up first.  All pimps, drug dealers, arms dealers shall be put away.  Change the police chief and mayor if that is what it takes.

Bring in organizations such as Habitat for Humanity to build new affordable homes, and clean up the street.  In order to run such organization in the city you requires retired police officers, service men and men who have balls to stand up for crime to build a better America.

Governor shall be sponsoring this program at some level wit h his heart in it, not just the vote mind set.  If he has his heart in rebuilding the city, votes will automatically follow.

    My 2 Cents,

I used to live in Flint, and i have been to Camden a few times, and Flint did not seem as scary. But the sad thing is, once you have been tagged, your name is always going to be up there. I agree with one of the other comments that there are probably lesser known, and smaller towns worse, but they have not been named as of yet, so they will never “catch up” to Flintown or Camden.  After all, are not there bad parts of just about every town over 40 or 50 thousand people?  What is the trophy?

You can’t argue with statistics saying it’s the second most dangerous city.

  • Albert

And still, there is good people there, despite how dangerous it is.

  • CMD4LIFE.

I LIVED IN CAMDEN IN THE 90′S BACK THEN IT WAS BAD AND IT STILL IS AND IT ALWAYS GONNA BE, IT’S THE WAY OF LIFE  THE CITY IT’S NEVER GONNA CHANGE THE ONLY WAY TO LIVE IS IN STREET MODE.IS NOT A BAD PLACE TO BE YOU JUST HAVE TO KNOW THE GAME.

Dude…want to spread negativity elsewhere? You’ve said that twice already. I live in Newark (Rutgers Student) and its what I can AFFORD. I’m sure the same applies to the people of Camden. If I had 1200 a month to spend on a 1bedroom in Hoboken (Drunk yuppie land).. hell, I would.

  • Biz

when are you stupid crackers gonna get the picture? you can’t have moorestowns and cherry hills without camdens. wake up and realize you are part of the problem. the war on drugs is a big business that fuels the prison industrial complex. the us has the most people in jail in the whole world. it’s all connected. you sick freaks think you are all detached from the so-called problems of society. you are every bit as much the problem as these people in camden. except they have a lot less choices than you. quit your annoying whining, like your waiting for everyone else to get their act together, how sanctimonious.

  • Hop_devil61

    well said

  • 420

less choices but there are still choices you choose to be scum! you think white people have it wonderful i was homeless at 15 now im in college working on getting my life in line i could have CHOSE to rob steal or kill their were plenty of times i didnt give a shit but I chose to do things right its 2011 you think the whole world is against you get a clue and these crackers that have it so good trust me they dont give 2 shits about how your living or how many of you moolies kill eachother or tear you cities apart they arent whining for you or giving a damn if you pull your act together

  • Biz

scum is a subjective term. see, you think sociopaths are only mindless heartless ghetto hoodlums or jeffrey dahmer serial killers. sociopathy is genetic and is represented in every class of society but most especially the nuttos at the top of the foodchain that run society and create culture and mentalities through the media and political social engineering. you middle class status quo suburban freaks are the worker bees for their self annihilating machine. socio economics race and class structures are decades in the making kid. while your wasting your time and money in college learn something useful, learn about human psychology and generational attitudes and culture and parenting and then come back to me with an argument that is saying something. the really horrendous people in Camden are a minority, most of the people there are average people, like everywhere else, who do as much as average people do, no better or worse, they just happened to be at the bottom of the ladder instead of the middle. getting your life together has nothing to do with going to college, becoming a status quo sheeple, getting a career or any of that BS Koolaid. Conversely, breaking arbitrary laws, or living hand to mouth doesn’t make you a bad person.

You bring up a good point. But after your racist comment, everything you say goes right down the toilet. Just another angry racist. Go fuck yourself, Biz.

  • anon_mad_white_male

i never understood the ethnic slur “crackers”. it’s self defeating. you’re trying to ridicule people by referencing a time when white people actually OWNED black people. ethnic slurs are meant to demoralize or demean, however, cracker seems like a compliment. you’re acknowledging the fact that white people owned black people and whipped them, hence the cracking sound and the name “cracker”. (black) people need to take responsibility for their actions and stop blaming the whites for keeping them down. you live in AMERICA, do something with yourselves and stop being animals who think it’s ok to rob, kill, and rape others because white people are historically more successful.

  • 655321

i am white and i totally agree with Biz.

if people could get out the habit of thinking about “me”, instead of “we”.. this whole world could benefit. but it won’t. no one thinks about anything farther than their nose, no matter what race they are and no matter where they live.

  • LBD

actually, it’s not a blow to Newark, we don’t give a fuck what goes on in Camden, we do our own thing in The Brickz. To say that we thought we were the toughest hoods out there is a blind statement on your part. We don’t compare our hoods or ourselves to Camden or anyplace or anyone else. With so many cities and towns in America, the distinction of second most dangerous city in the country is more of a black eye to Camden and more reason to NUKE the fucking place right off the map.

obviously NOT Lola, as you see, Newark and East Orange are not on the list or in the discussion, SO SHUT THE FUCK UP with that BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • LBD

hey thomas jr. what the fuck kind of statement is that?  For every UGLY (as you say) black person that you can show me, I can show you 3 UGLY white people.  As for some blacks being nice, everyone no matter what color they are, is nice until they are rubbed the wrong way.

  • Biz

race doesn’t exist. white is a culture only. i say crackers because i know race doesn’t exist but i want to use a powerful word that can hurt, the way white people use such words, only to good effect. it’s time for ‘whitey’ to wake up, been sleep walking for too long. don’t take it personal. are you a collective or are you you?

  • Biz

maybe to you it’s a compliment because you are a self loathing pseudo-responsibility obsessed status quo authoritarian bootlicker who is admittedly mad. enough with that tired take responsibility line. nothing in my post suggests not taking responsibility. it’s YOU who needs to take responsibility, stop worrying about the blackman. Stop feeding the machine of so-called success. have a better opinion of yourself first and then you might care enough to see that Camden is full of a lot more decent and at worst normal average, people than those who rob kill and rape.

  • MOOLIE

@bIZ  F*%$# MOOLIE…WHEN ARE YOU’RE PEOPLE GOING TO PROGRESS AND STOP BLAMING OTHER PEOPLE AND RACES FOR YOUR SHORTCOMINGS.  SPEAK INTERLLIGENTLY AND GET TREATED LIKE HUMAN BEINGS, NOT THE SLIGHTLY EVOLVED MONKEYS YOU ARE…

Rutgers needs to buy the rest of the city surrounding campus, introduce that faux-hipster culture (fake bohemians love cheap rent for their record stores and coffee shops), and make the public system of higher education the backbone of the area. Unfortunately, industry is long gone from Camden, and has been since the 60′s; unless someone strikes gold under Campbells Field, its not coming back anytime soon.

Much like Fordham did with the area surround the Rose Hill campus in the bronx, the economy needs to come from within. Rutgers has plenty of funds to make the undergrad school competitive in the area – the only schools they’d compete with are Drexel and Temple.

Other than education spurring a renaissance in the city, I don’t see it coming back soon, if ever. Its not a dying city – its dead. Its all low rent housing. The people can be black, white, green or yellow – but as long as they are in a cycle of poverty surrounded by more poverty with no real way out, crime is a certain byproduct. We can’t throw our hands up and blame it on any one group or reason (that would be too easy, and would be ignoring the fact that the city planners a half-century did a horrible job diversifying the cities tax base and infrastructure), but we can look for options to remedy the situation. I think it starts with education.

  • Biz

lol. u funny. i guess your post was tongue in cheek. or at least i hope. when u say progress i guess you mean the bootlicking consumer debt slave status that most ‘white’ people enjoy. yeah, real progress. get a mortgage, college loans, financed cars, insurance, wage slaving career and progress like us goddamn it. you must and will be tamed you darkies! submit to our order and control! be good soulless drones like us! stop with your wild, free spirited savagery. play by the rules! our rules! order, control, self loathing, dualistic philosophy, that’s what whitey is offering you dark skinned monkeys! ooohhhh yess massa sound like a good deal to me! sign me up massa!

  • Biz

you are right Dan, education is the only way, and it will have to occur over generations, not overnight. the only thing i’d disagree with you on is that it should come from the school system. the school systems are the problem. schools are obedience training, indoctrination camps. the awakening process has to be a slow shift in consciousness that occurs through self education, self awareness, the internet and alternate media. the school system is just gonna pump out more robots, that fuel consumerism, corporatism, status quo politics, fascism or socialism and which only put bandaids over internal injuries. camden is not THE problem, camden is a symptom of a larger problem which is very convoluted but involves everybody. cherry hill, moorestown, haddonfield, voorhees, medford etc. are not the antithetical answers, they are a problem in their own rights.

  • Carrie M

habitat for humanity has been building houses in camden for a long time.  they can only do so much.

  • Guest

go get ‘em Biz…….that is hilarious!

spell check moolie, spell check. ohhh and black people aren’t the ones claiming to be evolved from apes…white people are. soooo, I guess you’re the slightly evolved monkey. SMH.

educate yourself with information, not hate or resentment or whatever other negative thoughts and feelings you have toward black people. understand that racism unfortunately does still exist in this country of “opportunity” … some culture have to work harder at what white people “seem” to have fall in their laps (some of them). do you even know any hard-working, educated, intelligent black people…I doubt it.

and please stop acting like crime and violence only exist because of black people…like they invented it! OMG you’re really ignorant.

get a grip and a clue dude.

  • Guest

wooooooow… you’re even more ignorant than Moolie. SMH!

    ya ugly bastard! lmfao

  • Guest

really dude!? there’s so much ignorance in this comment that I can’t begin trying to educate you. I’m sure you wouldn’t understand it anyway. stop posting, you just look stupid.

Are you insane? It’s that very type of New Age cheer that gets cities like that in the first place: by giving someone false hope and cheering them without ANY MORAL GUIDANCE (how convenient for you to do too!) and without any concern for what problems cause the problems there (how convenient for you too!) and by giving them unrealistic encouragement. Are you saying they can be kings of the universe if they want to? If so, check into a mental institution.
