Sportswriter Bill Conlin Retires After Purported Child Molestation Charges

*Update: NBC has just gotten word from the Daily News indicating that Conlin has retired, not resigned. Nancy Phillips’ Inquirer article has also been released.

Deadspin is reporting that Bill Conlin, a long-time sportswriter for Daily News, has just resigned due to forthcoming charges of child molestation. Gawker’s editor-in-chief, A.J. Daulerio, who previously wrote for Philly Mag, broke the news earlier today.

Daulerio is citing inside sources at The Inquirer and a yet-to-be-released story from investigative reporter Nancy Phillips (also of the Philadelphia Inquirer) detailing the allegations. In the Deadspin article, Daulerio also reports that Conlin has recently hired a lawyer and is currently residing in Largo Florida.

Conlin’s biography states that he’s been writing for Daily News since 1965, covering all sorts of beats from the Phillies to the Winter Olympics. He also recently won the 2011 J. G. Taylor Spink Award.

We’ll keep you posted as more details emerge.
