South Jersey Suspect Charged in Geno’s Beating

A suspect has been charged in last week’s Geno’s beating that soured Philly’s post Winter Classic buzz. As it turns out, all of our existential, sports-related anguish was for naught. The alleged culprit, Danny Veteri, is actually from South Jersey.

According to the Inquirer, Veteri has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, conspiracy aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment for the altercation that occurred with two Rangers fans. Fortunately for him, there’s no charge for cruel and unusual sports defamation.

Recently released on $50,000 bail, Veteri has a pretty extensive criminal record, including previous charges of aggravated assault and possession of heroin (there’s a shocker). Police are currenly searching for the remaining suspects that took part in the Winter Classic clash.

This latest instance of demented behavior from a few Philly sports fans captured increased attention because everyone in the country was focused on Philly; I mean, we were hosting the friggin’ Winter Classic, remember? The victim of the beat down is also a police officer and veteran of the Iraq War, so that just made us look even more rotten.

But, more symbolically, the melee took place right in front of Geno’s, arguably Philly’s most recognizable landmark. So while Philly fans are no doubt relieved that the suspect isn’t a native, the fact that some Jersey clown could so easily mutilate our already degenerate reputation is troubling to say the least.
