All Philadelphians know just how good a Philly Cheesesteak can be. But across the country there are a slew of dreadful imitators attempting to replicate our beloved sandwich without fully understanding its nuance.
Unfortunately, their inexperience results in some of the most putrid and blasphemous concoctions that even a South Philly dog wouldn’t dare eat.
But others attempt to import “real” cheesesteaks along with our requisite cheesesteak etiquette, which just comes off even more hokey.
We recently caught wind of one of these places in Los Angeles. Ok, it’s actually a truck, painted with a fake brick pattern and labeled “Cheesesteaks Wit or Witout.” Notice how the truck is blazoned with Philly-related food like “TastyKakes,” “Hank’s,” “Italian Wit,” and “Amorosos.” The window even explains just what a cheesesteak is and how to order one.
“Real cheesesteaks are cooked fresh, covered with cheese, provolone or cheese-wiz and rest in a roll dripping with grease. Sound disgusting? You’re obviously not from Philadelphia.”
