For all of you out there who hope that our bars could stay open just a tiny bit longer; your prayers may finally be answered. In an attempt to generate money for the Philadelphia School District, City Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown is proposing a bill that would allow all bars to stay open until 3 am.
The next step in this process is for State Representative Vanessa Lowery Brown to introduce the bill to the State House of Representatives. The bill would give Philadelphia the power to decide operating hours for bars. As it stands now, operating hours are decided upon by the infamous PLCB.
Before any action is taken and those extra hours of partying can commence, the bill must be passed in Harrisburg at the State General Assembly. If this bill does get passed, an additional $5 million dollars of revenue is expected to be earned from the extra hour alone. This money, added to the $24 million dollars that liquor taxes created in 2010, could be a tremendous help to the surrounding school districts suffering from shrinking budgets.
The downfall? Certain people, including AAA Mid-Atlantic spokeswoman Jenny Robinson, are concerned that the extra hour of alcohol ingestion could cause an increased amount of drunk driving in our area.
