Lazy and Jaded Cab Riders May Now Pay More

In a society where swiping a plastic card gets you just about anything, the need to carry actual cash in your pocket is slowly dying out. But if you’re one of those paperless, plastic-carrying people, you may want to rethink your decision – especially if you’re partial to using Philly cabs.

NewsWorks.org reports that the Philadelphia Parking Authority is currently deciding whether to approve a new proposal that will enact a $10 minimum on using credit cards for cab fare.

Cab drivers are charged five to ten percent for credit card transactions and cabbies claim that, for short rides costing $5, the practice is unsustainable.  Combine that with the high price of gas and other operating costs, and you have a recipe for financial disaster for a cab driver.

Nothing is set in stone yet, but this is a sign that society’s not ready to go totally plastic just yet.  Cold, hard cash still wins out, especially if you’re a cab driver.
