Authorities along the East Coast are baffled after discovering a recent wave of unexplained dolphin deaths.
Just this week, three dolphins were found dead off the coast of South Jersey, while Cape Cod has seen around 160 deceased dolphins since January. To put those numbers in perspective, that’s already more than half their annual total of dolphin deaths, as reported by Katie Moore of the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
On Sunday, a common dolphin was found stuck in a ladder near a pier in an Ocean City lagoon. The dolphin was found dead at 4pm, right around the same time another dolphin washed ashore in Cape May County. A third dolphin was also found beached at Barnegat Bay the following day.
After analyzing the dolphins, investigators still have not found a common link between their cause of deaths. Examinations for the three dolphins found in New Jersey have been scheduled in hopes of shedding some light on the mystery.
