It appears that 270 Camden police officers will soon be on the hunt for a new job by the end of the year, as Mayor Dana Redd is expected to break up the city’s entire police force.
In an effort to accommodate an 11% budget reduction, Redd recently announced her plans to replace Camden’s police department with a “county-run force.” With a layoff plan already in the works, the mayor is steadily moving forward with preparations for her newly devised strategy. Reportedly, the new county-force would take on at least 400 new officers, only half of which would be employed from the current Camden force.
Defending her decision, Redd reasoned, “It’ll put more boots on the ground pure and simple, patrolling the neighborhoods, out in the community, helping us to fight crime and leverage our resources.”
With 39 murders already in the books for the past year, however, Camden FOP president John Williamson has since blasted the decision, stating, “When you’re talking about the second most dangerous city in America, you just don’t drop people in and let them learn as you go.”
The layoff plan is expected to be delivered to the state by the end of August.
