In the midst of America’s ongoing gun control debate, Pennsylvania has finally released thousands of mental health records to the National Gun Background Check Database.
After PA was deemed “one the most uncooperative states when it comes to sharing mental health records” two years ago by the group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, nearly 643,000 records of mentally ill Pennsylvanians were sent from state police to the federal government.
According to a 2011 report from the organization founded by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Mayors Against Illegal Guns found that the rules prohibiting mentally ill Pennsylvanians from purchasing guns were actually more demanding than federal guidelines. After considerable time passed without clarification from the federal government, Pennsylvania State Police simply opted to release all of the available records.
Director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Mark Glaze, said the group applauded Pennsylvania State Police for “cutting through the bureaucratic obstacles and putting the safety of American citizens first.”
