You feel like it’s following you everywhere you go. Those eclectic blends of hip-hop and house music fused with electro have you ready to shake a tail feather while you party at McFadden’s, dine at Cuba Libre, shop at Guess and even while volunteering at the Relay for Life. Who powers those erratic compositions that put, for example, Say Anything's rock-band lyrics over a reggae beat to sound sensational? It’s none other than DJ Ronnie Dubbz, who is taking the Philadelphia music scene by storm with his unique sound.
DJ Ronnie Dubbz, a recent Temple University graduate with an advertising degree, puts his college education to good use by advertising and promoting himself on a constant basis. This has led him to be booked by numerous big name clients such as Marmont, Denim and 32 Degrees. It has also helped him achieve a tremendous fan base (he has more than 3,300 Facebook friends). Gaining popularity during a time when many Philadelphia DJs are flaunting their breakbeats and hardcore scratch abilities, DJ Ronnie Dubbz leaves it to his real-time live mash-ups to make him prominent. “My mash-ups consist of taking an a cappella from one track, then adding an instrumental from another track to make a song," says Dubbz. "They are all very random and high-energy, because the regular stuff kinda' gets boring after a while."
Dubbz's approach appears to be working, as many can’t seem to resist the fast-paced music that makes even Britney Spears’ old songs sound like new hits--he mixes one over the '90's hit “Poison." The talent is undeniable when you hear the track that fluently unites hip-hop smashes like “Get Low” with '80's classics such as “P.Y.T” then smoothly transitions back into a techno-lover’s paradise. “I love spinning anything I can," says Dubbz. "And my music can become very ADD-ish, but in a good way. Like if I could fart or burp on a track, I would mix that in too, because I’m trying to venture out and do new things.”
Wanna’ catch DJ Ronnie Dubbz in action? Head over to Marmont on Thursday, May 1, to hear him mix the night up. Can’t make it on Thursday, but you still crave his beats? Check out DJ Ronnie Dubbz’s Web site for a complete listing of his upcoming shows.
