Description: Nestled within the vast woods of East Fairmount Park lies SMITH the Kids' Play Place in the Park, a century-old Philadelphia attraction. Built in 1899 as a rural escape for Philadelphia's children, SMITH represents a return to simple, old-fashioned play- a kind of play that places a higher premium on imagination than on software downloads. The SMITH playtime experience has two parts: the Playground and the Playhouse. The six-acre playground (for kids 10 and under) includes of 50 pieces of brand-new, state-of-the-art equipment featuring unique designs and arrangements meant to stimulate both physical and imaginative play. The hallmark of the Playground is the Ann Newman Giant Wooden Slide: a 39'-long by 13'-wide slide built into the rolling hills of SMITH's grounds that kids will enjoy over and over. The Playhouse (for kids 5 and under), though seemingly a Victorian mansion, was built solely as a play space for children, never as a residence. Within the 4-story, 24,000-square-foot, Playhouse, children can build towers in the block room, play "house" or drive a "train," ride away on a tricycle in "Smithville" or just kick back with a book. If you are looking for a place for the kids to let off some steam, but the spending budget for this family vacation is dried up, visit SMITH: it's FREE and open to the public Tuesday through Sunday. No batteries required.
