Buy Fresh, Buy Local
Supermarket loyalists may finally be lured from the club cards and do-it-yourself check-out aisles of their favorite chain during Buy Fresh, Buy Local, the annual celebration to promote the benefits of local foods. (Which, if you don’t already know, include helping the environment, supporting local farmers and promoting a healthier lifestyle.) Every day there’s something different: Standard Tap features local beers and hors d’oeuvres from 5-7pm July 16, Southwark serves up happy-hour specials on Bluecoat Gin and Slyfox Beer on July 17, and on July 19 there’s the “Good Food, Good Beer, and the Rest is History” tasting party at the Society Hill New Market. Philly Fit Tours
Admit it: You think sightseeing tours are for tourists. We did too until we heard about Fusion’s Philly Fit Tours, which are just as appealing to in-shape out-of-towners as they are to city-dwelling gym rats. The new series includes two separate excursions for “sight jogging.” Not only will you burn calories, you’ll also gain access to sights inaccessible to those on buses, trolleys, and those super-annoying Ride the Ducks boats-on-wheels. At each stop, tour guides will give the group a bit of historic background, while also leading a round of strength-training exercises. Whether you take the Independence or Rocky Run, it’s sure to work wonders for both your body and mind.

Joe Sixpack Beer Sampling at McGillin’s
Few things rival a frosty mug of beer. No one knows this better than Joe Sixpack (Don Russell), who penned
Joe Sixpack’s Philly Beer Guide: A Reporter’s Notes on the Best Beer-Drinking in America. The beer connoisseur will host the ultimate beer bash at McGillin’s. The evening will feature the “Joe Sixpack of Beer,” a generous beer sampler featuring six beers and $2 microbrew pints. Sixpack will be in house all night to sign books, field questions and hang with local beer enthusiasts. There will also be karaoke, if you’re so inclined. Not a night owl? Stop by the Free Library pre-party for the reading at 7pm.

How to Be Single, her first venture into the world of chick-lit. Through a character named Julie Jensen, we’ll learn important lessons about independence in a much less embarrassing fashion than those self-help novels we love to hate. If she’s good enough for Oprah, she’s good enough for us.
