Most gallery events are one and done: check out some art, enjoy the free food and consider your attempt at adding more culture to your life complete for another year. Center City District Gallery Night offers the chance to peek inside the eclectic assortment of galleries that make up the city’s art scene. Visit well-known destinations like the Gershman Y and the Art Institute of Philadelphia and intimate spaces like Gallery 339 and Lisa M. Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention
Get inked or just get ideas when more than 100 artists from across the globe come together for this annual convention put on by Philly’s own Tattoed Kingpin. Already got ink? There will different contests throughout the day for best sleeve, chest piece, tribal and the tattoo of the day. And check out a slew of live music performances from the Anabolics, Cobra Clutch, The Company Corvette and more plus live painting and suspension performances. Local (tattoed) ladies like the Suicide Girls and Philly Roller Girls are slated to make appearances. The Movie Music of Spike Lee and Terence Blanchard
Often controversial and always talked about, Spike Lee’s body of work breaks boundaries no matter what the subject matter. The influential filmmaker will be on hand to emcee a retrospective of his work put to music by the Terence Blanchard Quintet. Blanchard, who will be joined by a 20-piece quartet for the event, will perform scores from films throughout Lee’s career, such as Bamboozled, Inside Man, Clockers, Malcolm X, Jungle Fever, 25th Hour, Mo’ Better Blues, and the recent Emmy Award winning HBO Katrina documentary, When the Levees Broke.
