Chinua Achebe
If you went to college and took a world literature class, then author Chinua Achebe’s “Things Fall Apart” was most likely the first book on the professor’s syllabus. Particularly if your instructor was anything like ours and wore a tribal cap to class as an aesthetic complement to the groundbreaking novel about colonization’s devastating effect on the Ibo people of Nigeria. Achebe, also of Nigerian descent, was inspired to write the book to show the Western world a different perspective about African culture. Author Lorene Cary will interview Achebe to mark the book’s 50th anniversary. Thurs., Mar. 27, 8pm, $7 students, $14 general admission, Central Library, 1901 Vine St., 215.686.5322, www.library.phila.gov

The documentary also offers the chance to catch clips of his box-office greats. Carrie Rickey, film critic at the Philadelphia Inquirer, is guest speaking.
