The Philly native hasn’t spent much time in the city of Brotherly Love lately; Powell has spent the last 10 years traveling the world and documenting his experiences photographically. His exhibit has everything from lush forests to items of urban decay. Join him for an artist reception on May 10 from 2 – 4pm. Kooza Cirque du Soleil
The combination of incredible acrobatic performances and the silliness of clowning is what have made Cirque du Soleil famous around the world, and now it’s coming to the Avenue of the Arts. Kooza tells the story of a loner, The Innocent, in search of his place in the world. Along the way he meets characters who evoke both dramatic and comic scenes, creating the overall visual and emotional spectacle that is Crique du Soleil. May 8 – June 15, Washington and Broad Streets, 800.678.5440, www.cirquedusoleil.com
Erykah Badu at the Tower Theater
Combine R&B with hippy-chic and you get Erykah Badu. The definitive songstress is not only famous for her massive head wraps, but for her delicate and tortured vocals that have been compared to Billie Holiday. Check her out at the Tower Theater on Mother's Day (hint hint, daughters). May 11, Tower Theater, 69 and Ludlow Streets, 610.352.2887, www.tower-theater.com
