Staff Picks: Summer Solstice Celebration
June 16, 2008
By: Aroundphilly.com Staff

Kimmel Center Summer Solstice Celebration
Party until you drop at the Kimmel Center's annual Summer Solstice Celebration. Beginning at 3pm, every corner of the Kimmel Center will buzz with 15 hours of jazz, classical, world, pop, R&B and dance performances, as well as storytelling, family activities and games. As the sun rises, bang in the summer with an enormous drum circle. Highlights include: Baby Loves Disco; Bob and Barbara's Drag Show; Fuego Nuevo Aztec Dance; Peter Nero’s Philly Pops Festival Brass; QUIZZO Tournament with Johnny Goodtimes; and a late-night set with DJ Spinderella of Salt-n-Pepa. Sat., June 21, 3pm – dawn, $10 or $5 for kids ages 12 and under, Kimmel Center, 260 S. Broad St., 215.893.1999, www.kimmelcenter.org

Ettore Salon and Spa Presents Tease
Ettore Salon and Spa, a trendsetter in the Philadelphia beauty industry, marks ten years in the business with Tease, a luxury lifestyle event at the Ritz-Carlton on June 22. Besides people-watching, a fashion show, photography exhibit, dance performances, and a rotating DJ line-up are the highlights. Enjoy complimentary food samples and drink specials. Proceeds benefit the Attic Youth Center, the city’s only agency serving gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth. Sun., June 22, 8pm – 2am, $25, Ritz-Carlton, Ten Avenue of the Arts, 215.523.8000, www.ettorespa.com

2008 Irish Festival
Just think of the Irish Festival as the summertime equivalent to St. Patrick’s Day. You may not be able to hop on board the Erin Express but you’ll get to wear shorts and drink outside and that’s not exactly a bad trade-off. It’s free to hang at Penn’s Landing for the day, taking in the sounds of Paddy’s Well, Round Tower Band and Timmy Kelly or performances from Irish dance schools like McDade, Timoney, and Rince Ri. And, just like on March 17, Finnigan’s Wake will be serving up traditional grub like shepherd’s pie and pulled pork. Sun., June 22, noon – 8pm, free, Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing, Columbus Boulevard and Chestnut Street, 215.922.2386, www.pennslandingcorp.com
