The Color Purple
Philadelphians will get a taste of Broadway’s finest when the City of Brotherly Love hosts the first North American touring production of The Color Purple. Known for its record-breaking success (and producer Oprah Winfrey), the musical will run 32 performances through July 13, enough time for all of us to witness the story behind those rave reviews. Based on the novel by Alice Walker, it’s an inspiring story of a woman who finds love and success in the face of adversity. Go ahead, paint the town purple. Through Sun., July 13, call for show times, $28-$138, Kimmel Center, 260 S. Broad St., 215.893.1999, www.kimmelcenter.org
Nandalal Bose
In its first stop outside of Asia (and the only on the East Coast), the traveling exhibition for Nandalal Bose will hit the Philadelphia Museum of Art on June 27. Known as the “father of Indian modern art," Bose’s work focuses on significant cultural aspects of his native country. Largely misunderstood in the Western World, Bose’s work is well worth witnessing. From Gandhi to the emergence from British rule, his influential art has been deemed an Indian national treasure. Nurture your inner artist; check out nearly 100 Bose paintings in various styles and media.
Sun., July 27 – Mon., Sept 1, Tues. - Sun., 10am - 5pm; Fri., 10am - 8:45pm, $10 - $14, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Benjamin Franklin Pkwy, 215.763.8100, www.philamuseum.org
