Spring is in full swing and to me, that means one thing: baseball. The Phillies--or as I’m calling them this year, the Utleys, since Chase is doing the work of a whole starting lineup--are toeing the .500 line, better than in Aprils past, but still not the powerhouse we saw last September. Even if you can’t get tickets for a game, you can recreate the experience with the TV tuned to Comcast and these ballpark treats.
Peanuts
Peanut butter fans will go bonkers over the peanut pancake at Penang in Chinatown, a roti-like crepe slathered with chunky peanut butter so rich and high-quality, a slick of nutty golden peanut oil oozes out the sides. Each bite properly coats the roof of your mouth while a drizzle of chocolate syrup and scoop of vanilla ice cream keeping the peanut butteriness in check. Keep this crepe in mind when things start getting nutty in the eighth inning; Penang delivers and does take-away.
Popcorn
The two best things at Pennsport’s Ugly American both happen to be free. The first is the heavenly honey butter-slathered buttermilk biscuits, baked by Carla Goncalves, wife of chef David Gilberg. The second is also Carla’s creation, habanero caramel corn, served in bowls at the bar. Goncalves pops the kernels in habanero oil before tossing the fresh popcorn with peanuts, caramel, and chili for a sweet, hot, and salty treat that’s perfect for munching while watching the game.
Hot Dogs
You’ll find Texas Wieners down deep in South Philly, a black-and-white-tiled dog joint in the shadow of the Melrose Diner. The Works is a frank split, topped with raw chopped white onion and zesty brown mustard sauce and encased in a soft bun that wraps the wiener in a pillow of dough. Cheese Works adds cheese; the Texas Tommy is bacon and cheese; the Texan is loaded with home fries, onions and peppers; and the Chicago-style gets pickles, mustard, onion, tomatoes and peppers. TW's are perfect for tailgating to-go, or try their Six-Pack, Box and Blackjack specials that come with six, 10 and 21 hot dogs, respectively.
Ice Cream
Baseball and ice cream go hand in hand like J-Roll and stolen bases. Right now, I’m having a bit of a thing with the vanilla frozen yogurt at Ikea. Don’t make a big deal out of it, we’ve only hooked up like three times… three days in a row. Lately, I find myself making excuses to visit the blue-and-yellow megastore. The Swedish fro yo is inexplicably good. Served on a classic kiddie-sized cake cone, it’s creamy and cool, with good body and a refreshing tang. Now that I think of it, I really should pick up the Utäng lantern for the Bollö patio set…
