The Ragnar Relays
June 30, 2009

Kailyn Finnegan was a varsity swimmer at Lehigh University before falling in love with writing. Finnegan grew up on Kiawah Island off the coast of South Carolina. She enjoys working out, trying exotic sushi rolls and going to the beach with friends when not filming and writing for Aroundphilly.com

Every summer, you get suckered into doing that 5k run for one of your company’s charities. This time, pick 11 of your closest friends, come up with a catchy team name and, heck, wear tutus as you listen to live music while running through a 193-mile adventure relay. The Ragnar Relays, which will be held September 25 - 26, will start in Cumberland, Md., and end in the heart of our nation’s great capital, Washington, D.C.

How are you going to cover 193 miles? Each team is allowed two vehicles, preferably decorated with streamers, balloons and other accessories. One team member is running at all times while the rest go along for the ride, providing your fellow teammate water and support until the next runner switches in. Each of the 11 team members must run at least three times and can run anywhere between 3 and 8 miles at a time.

Training for this event is easier than it sounds. Check out Mapmyrun.com and allow the site to personalize a running regimen for you. Medals and T-shirts are awarded to all teams who finish. Additional awards are given to the teams with the best decorated vehicle, most creative team name and for all division-place finishers.

Just in case you don’t believe a running relay can turn into a road-trip party, check out this video footage of Team X-Treme from last year’s Ragnar Relay.
