Top Ten Live Arts and Fringe Picks
September 5, 2006
By: Matt Smith - msmith@aroundphilly.com

Out of more than 1,000 performances we managed to whittle down the list of what not to miss to just 10 of our favorites during the Live Arts and Philly Fringe Festival. From nuns and transvestite puppets to a one-man rock opera, look for these comedic and theatrical highlights from both festival camps.

20-Grand, a Table, and Two Chairs
Random Acts of Theater stages a show about two guys in black suits sitting around a table counting a lot of cash. If that sounds absurd, it's supposed to be. (Fringe) Sept. 7, 8 pm, Sept. 8, 9:15pm, Sept. 9, 7pm, Sept. 10, 6pm; $10, Triangle Theater, 1220 N. Lawrence St.

The Convent
Jo Strømgren Kompani, one of Norway's foremost dance companies, offers this out-there production set in the European Alps. Not to be confused with Sister Act or Nunsense. (Live Arts) Sept. 6 - 10, 8pm, $20, Arden Theatre Company, 40 N. Second St.

Eye-95 re-tarred
Brat Productions' celebrates its 10th anniversary with a re-tarring, er, re-staging, of its cult classic, billed as a "down and dirty rock-a-billy extravaganza." Rock-a-billy on. (Live Arts) Aug. 29, 8pm, pay-what-you-can preview; Aug. 30 - 31, 8pm, $15 previews; regular run: Sept. 1 - 3, 6 - 9, 12 - 16, 9:30pm, $15, Northern Liberties Design Center, 919 N. Fifth St.

The Guided Tour
Four-time festival favorite Kaibutsu (Northern Liberty) returns with an encore performance of this off-the-beaten-path trek through Philadelphia. Liberty Bell not included. (Live Arts) Sept. 2 - 4, 9 - 10, 16 at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm, $20, meet at 239 Arch St.

LunchLady Doris/Rare Bird Show
Laugh 'till you cry when two of Philadelphia's best comedic improvisational troupes showcase their respective talents. (Fringe) LunchLady Doris: Sept. 8 - 9, 9pm, Sept. 10, 5pm, Sept. 15 - 16, 7pm, $10, Gallery Siano, 309 Arch St.; Rare Bird Show: Sept. 2, 8pm, Sept. 7, 10pm, Sept. 8, 14 and 15 at 8pm and 10pm, $10, Independence Park Hotel, William Penn Room, 235 Chestnut St.

Mind Over Matters
This one-off performance, subtitled "An Evening with DJ Spooky & King Britt featuring Bora Yoon & Tim Motzer," is just that: a mash-up showcasing these adventurous musicians. (Live Arts) Sept. 16, 9pm, $15, The Rotunda, 4014 Walnut St.

The Rocky Horror Puppet Show
I know I'm always game for a sweet transvestite from Transylvania. As presented by Little Fish Theatre Collaborative, this puppet show certainly doesn't belong in Mr. Rogers' neighborhood. (Fringe) Sept. 14 - 15, 8pm, Sept. 16, 2pm and 8pm, $15, The Theatre at 2111 Sansom St.

The Sea
The multitalented James Sugg (Pig Iron Theatre Company) spent two weeks aboard a freighter vessel to prepare for this one-man rock opera. Ahoy, mateys! (Live Arts) Sept. 7 - 9, 10:30pm, $15, Wilma Theater, 265 S. Broad St.

Voices Underwater
Promising theatrical newcomer Gas & Electric Arts (Anna Bella Eema) tackles race issues in its second-ever production. (Fringe) Aug. 30 - Sept. 1, 3, 5 - 8, 10 at 7pm; Sept. 2, 9 at 2pm and 7pm, $20, Adrienne Theater, 2030 Sansom St.
